RDBMS vs OLAP

  •                                              ====================

    1.Types of   Database

        * RDBMS: Relational Database Management System- Store and Manage the Database.

        * OLAP (BI/BPM/EPM ): Online Analytical Processing-  Analysis and Reporting, Ex: Essbase

                 BI: Business Intelligence

                 BPM: Business Performance Management

                 *EPM: Enterprise Performance Management.

                                             Difference between RDBMS, OLAP?

                              RDBMS                                                         OLAP

    • Store and Manage the Database.                     * Analysis and Reporting
    • RDBMS database called “Table,”       * OLAP Database called “Cube.”
    • It is stored in Rows and Columns.        * Stores in “Cells and Blocks”.
    • 2-Dimensional Database                         * Multi-dimensional Database
    • Ex: Oracle Suite   * Ex: Oracle Hyperion Essbase,  IBM Cognos
                        Note: Oracle acquired Hyperion in 2007

    1. What is an OLAP server?

    • Multi-Dimensional Database(Cube)
    • OLAP Database called “Cube (Multidimensional Database)- Dimensions/Members/Parents/Children
    • Analytical Server
             2. What is the difference between Multidimensional (OLAP), Two Dimensional (RDBMS)?

    • Multidimensional database where the data will be stored in cells & Blocks.
    • Two-dimensional databases where the data will be stored in Rows & columns.

                          =============== Hyperion=======

1. What is Hyperion Software?

       Hyperion Software is an OLAP/Multi-Dimensional/BI/BPM/EPM Tool.

2. What is Hyperion Essbase?

   Essbase is a multidimensional database where the data is stored in cells & Blocks.
